Day 87 Piegan Pass

I left the Many Glacier lodge rather late (9:30) after eating the buffet breakfast and then falling asleep in my room for another hour.  The trail followed lake Josephine for a couple miles.  It was even paved so the tourists at the lodge can walk it without getting their dress shoes muddy.
But all good things must come to an end and the trail turned back into the CDT and went to hell – two miles of horse- chewed mud.  This is really hard on my bad ankle because you need to jump from one side of the trail to another to avoid slipping in the mud, and the sides are usually sloped. But of course, the amazing views more than make up for it and it is a beautiful day.

Eventually the trail started climbing more seriously and dried out.  The route up to Piegan pass was incredible.  Huge waterfalls, towering peaks, cliffs, glaciers, the works.  It seemed like something out of Lord of the Rings.  It was a long way up to Piegan pass.  On the way I met Beast again and a couple that I had met at brownies in East glacier.

It was a long downhill to my campsite at Reynolds creek.  There is an awesome swimming area right below the campsite where I cleaned up.  There are several other hikers here as well – Quicksilver and Little Buddy, and there is another group of 4 as well.  I let one of them named TLB camp in my site because they couldn’t all fit in their site.  TLB is a really nice guy studying history and wants to teach high school to troubled teens.

Before getting in my tent I had to pee so I looked to see if anyone could see me. The others were in the cooking area and the only place out of site was back behind TLB’s tent, so I peed in the grass maybe 10 feet behind his tent. I felt a little guilty but he wouldn’t know so no harm right? Well 20 minutes later I hear something and look outside my tent. There’s a deer licking the grass where I peed and digging it up and making a ruckus. Soon the others at the cooking area see it and I hear them say “What the hell is up with that deer?” They all came over and watched it and speculating on why it would be digging there like that. I just just played dumb, but can’t help but think they knew…
