Day 162 Janet’s Cabin

I said goodbye to Marco at 7:45 and ascended Searle pass. Today is a special day here for one of the mountain clubs. They lease a beautiful cabin known as Janet’s Cabin from the forest service and today is one of the rare helicopter resupplies. I encountered several hikers yesterday hiking up here for the event. Apparently all the supplies are flown in and all the trash and waste is flown out. Just as I reached the cabin I could hear the thwak- thwak of an approaching helicopter and watched the entire operation. It was very fast and efficient with the helicopter dropping off a cargo net full of boxes and then leaving with a different net full of boxes. It’s kind of funny – they call these “hiker huts” but this is a beautiful multistory log cabin complete with solar power.  Supposedly you can rent these.

Kokomo Pass (12,022 feet)

I traversed Elk Ridge for a few miles and then descended for many miles before ending up near Camp Hale where the 10th Mountain Division used to train.  I skipped the famous concrete barracks in favor of a forest service road that kept my elevation.

The Colorado Trail is so nice it even has swinging chairs!

I went over Tennessee pass and continued several miles to a water source and my camp.  I did 21 miles today on Guthooks but real miles is slightly less due to my shortcuts.  I saw no other CDT hikers after Marco.
