I was miserable and slept in my tent most of day. Grant Village sucks. Nobody here gives a shit. Everything is so commercialized and the park employees are used to dealing with hordes of tourists and simply do not care about your problems. I tried to get a room and told the lady why and she gave me some phony sympathy and then checks her computer. She then looks up and says no rooms are available. And I just look at her at a loss for words. And she looks blankly back at me. This place is absolutely huge with 6 distinct hotel buildings, each with dozens of rooms and the parking lots were always nearly empty! I don’t believe her. She makes no offer to try to find alternative lodging or to call someone that could help me. There were several other people behind the counter that heard what was going on and they just watched.
This is how everyone has been with the single exception of the guy who runs the showers for the campground. He let me take a shower even though it was past the 11:00 checkout time for the campground. His name was Joe. I told him he was the only one who gave me a break and tried to help me out. He said he knows how it is to be on the other side. Something I intend to remember if the shoe is ever on the other foot.
I walked a mile to the Grant Village back country ranger station to get an updated itinerary because my illness had totally blown my schedule. I explained my situation to the lady and she types some stuff on her computer and then tells me the computer is down and I need to come back tomorrow. Fuck this. I’ve had it with their bureaucratic BS. I’m going to do my own thing which is what I should have done all along.
