I was on the trail by 7:00 and ascended a small pass where I had breakfast overlooking the Green River valley. The trail then descended into the valley and went up valley for many miles past Green River Lakes. It’s easy to see how the lakes and river got their names – the water is unbelievably green and beautiful. All the while the spectacular Squaretop Mountain dominated the view up-valley.
During this phase I ran into 3 Nobo hikers I knew from New Mexico – Smackdown and his sister Double down. We visited for a while and then I ran into the Human Torch! He was always an interesting one and I admire how he just does his own thing. I really like him and he always has a ready smile. It was really fun to see them again.
Eventually the trail went past Squaretop Mountain and ascended several thousand feet to Green River pass at around 10,000 feet. On the way up I found a blueberry motherload and wasted a good hour stuffing my face. I passed beautiful Summit lake and am camped with two other hikers I met before: Townie and her friend Animal (a guy). We are camped near Pine Creek just past Summit Lake. Animal thinks he might have giardia and isn’t doing so well. Poor guy. It’s going to be cold tonight this high.
