Today we continued to gain elevation and hiked through juniper and pinyons and what I think are scrub oaks.
I thought we were going to have to drink cow water, but we heard rumors of a water cache near a campground off Hwy 90 so we pushed on. On the way I rolled my right ankle pretty bad coming down a hill. Always the right ankle <sigh>. I hope it will be ok for the big climb over Burro Peak tomorrow . We found the water cache – a case of bottled water and about 10 gallon jugs laying under a tree. There was even an orange and a banana which we ate.
We are sleeping in a campground area tonight near Hwy 90. I don’t think this is an official campground – just a small loop of dirt road near Hwy 90. There are a few motor homes in the distance so we camped down a ways along the edge of a wash. I’m under the stars but some wispy clouds are creeping in. I hope I don’t regret not setting up the tent. We have seen no other hikers the last two days.
I found a new dinner treat: tortillas + rehydrated refried beans with green chilies + jalapeno colby cheese sticks + McDonald’s hot sauce. Mmm.
